Resources for Directors, Coordinators & Catechists
of Catholic Faith Formation
Self-care for Catholic ministry leaders involves balancing spiritual, physical, emotional, and relational needs through practices like prayer, exercise, healthy boundaries, strong support systems (directors, peers, family), hobbies, and recognizing self-care as stewardship, not selfishness, to prevent burnout and sustain effective ministry.
Key Strategies
-
Spiritual: Prayer, scripture, worship, spiritual direction, gratitude.
-
Physical: Adequate sleep, nutrition, exercise, medical care.
-
Emotional/Mental: Counseling, self-awareness, stress management, laughter, therapy, hobbies, limiting substances.
-
Relational: Nurturing friendships, peer support groups, setting boundaries, family time.
Foundational Principles
-
Stewardship: You are caring for the gifts God gave you to better serve others; it's not selfish.
-
Resilience: Self-care builds the ability to bounce back from adversity.
-
Self-Awareness: Recognize your stressors and personal limits.
Practical Strategies
-
Schedule Rest: Plan rhythms of work, play, and rest; don't wait until you're depleted.
-
Build Support: Connect with spiritual directors, therapists, mentors, and peer groups (other clergy).
-
Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and create space for your own needs.
-
Engage in Hobbies: Pursue activities you enjoy outside of ministry to recharge.
-
Practice Gratitude: Focus on blessings to counter the temptation to grumble.
-
Nourish Your Body: Prioritize sleep, healthy eating, and regular physical activity.
-
Find Joy: Watch comedies, spend time with children, laugh often.
-
Process Emotions: Use journaling, prayer, or counseling to process challenges.
Overcoming Barriers
-
Challenge Guilt: Reframe self-care as essential for long-term ministry, not as an indulgence.
-
Seek Professional Help: Don't try to do it all alone; a counselor provides a safe space for growth.
Self Care : You can only care for others, if you are caring for yourself.
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:31
